03 — Decisions

Decision log

Context, choice and the price paid for each one.

D1

Static export on existing shared hosting

Context

The client already had Aruba Linux shared hosting, which can't run Node.js.

Decision

Build the site with Next.js and ship it as a static export, uploaded as plain HTML, CSS and JS.

Tradeoff

No server-side rendering, API routes or built-in image optimization.

Alternatives

Vercel, a VPS running Node, Wordpress

D2

Product catalog in the codebase

Context

The product range is small and rarely changes.

Decision

Define every product directly in the code instead of loading it from a CMS or database.

Tradeoff

The client can't edit products on their own; every change needs a new deploy.

Alternatives

Headless CMS, WordPress, Database

D3

Self-hosted PHP visit counter

Context

The client wanted to know how many visits the site gets.

Decision

A small PHP script on the same hosting, which already runs PHP, counts the visits.

Tradeoff

Only basic numbers, no detailed analytics.

Alternatives

Google Analytics, GoatCounter
